Playing Card Facts

Clubs represent the Warrior class; clubs being an early blunt weapon. Sometimes the cards will have swords.

diamond.gif (873 bytes)

Diamonds represent the Merchant Class; coinage being a commodity created by the middle class. Sometimes the cards will have coins or pentacles.

spade.gif (881 bytes)

Spades represent the Peasant Class, a spade is a small shovel used by farmers to dig in gardens. Sometimes the cards will have sticks, since the poor had the most rudimentary weapons and tools.

heart.gif (880 bytes)

Hearts represent the Upper class, since love was considered an abstract concept that could only be appreciated by the rich and  educated.

There are other classes of course. Most notably the Artist class which may be represented by the Joker.

And while we're talking about cards.  Do you know the proper names of the face cards in a standard deck?  From the VISUAL DICTIONARY here they are:
